Hidden gem amongst a bustling city

I am an explorer. I decided to rediscover the meaning of the wild at home in Kenya, and went to four different conservancies in a span of 25 days. I visited the Ol Kinyei and Olare Motorogi Conservancies in the Maasai Mara. I went to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Nanyuki and I visited the Selenkay Conservancy in Amboseli.  Each of these places were fascinating cosmos of a truly unique safari experience.  However, not venturing too far from home (Nairobi), I also decided to re-explore a place I had not been to in many years – The Nairobi National Park.

It was an early start for a Sunday morning. I reached the Nairobi National Park and was inside for only 10 minutes before I saw a cat... a really big one! Whether she enjoyed her meal or not, I’ll let you determine.

As I moved along, there came into sight warthogs, gazelles, giraffes and buffalos. I was told about this little bush camp, nestled in the middle of the forest in the park, so I kept an eye out for it. As the journey through the park continued, the zebras made an appearance, a rhino ran across the road with its little one, the crowned cranes were trotting along and the guinea fowls were out for their morning jog.

I saw a sign stating ‘NTC’ and followed the arrow through thick forest and bush. I finally came upon a clearing and was met by a bush buck, calmly sitting there, looking at me through her long lashes. There was a young Maasai guide who met me at my car, then walked me down along a pathway. As I walked down, I exclaimed at what greeted the eye. Hidden amongst the forest, is a tent with a comfortable and classy set up. The soft furnishings are set up for a cozy atmosphere. The camp manager provides me with a welcome drink then takes me on a tour of this little hidden gem in the midst of the Nairobi National Park. She says to me, ‘you are unaware that you are in the middle of the city, it is peaceful and serene, making it feel like you are the only one in the world’ – this is Nairobi Tented Camp.
