HIC! Booze becomes dearer in Delhi

Tipplers will have to shell out more to buy liquor in the national capital with the Delhi government giving its nod to the new excise policy for 2013-14 on Monday. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The Chief Minister further stated that the cabinet has approved the new excise policy for the year 2013-14. The new policy would focus on better availability of quality liquor. She added that there is no change in license fee for grant of license in Form-L-1 and L-1F. There is also no change in license fee for hotels, clubs, restaurants and retail vendors of liquor. The policy offers an option to the restaurants to deposit the license fee in two equal installments.

She also stated that the quality of liquor in Delhi is the best in the country. As per the government decision, the rates of Indian-made-foreign liquor will go up by five per cent, while that of country-made liquor will see a rise of up to 11 per cent.

Dikshit added that marginal hike in different quality and brands of liquor would come into force after issue of a notification.

The MRP of Delhi medium liquor has been increased from Rs 90 to Rs 100 per quart, similarly, the MRP of economy liquor has been increased from Rs 120 to Rs 130 per quart. The ex-distillery price (EDP) on non-free pricing brands (MRP Rs 350 and below in case of whisky and wine) will be increased by about 5 per cent. The local transportation charge has been increased from Rs 2.5 to Rs 3 per case and the freight has been increased from Rs 300 (10.5 per km) to Rs 300 (11 per km) per consignment of 600 cases.

Delhi is said to be the largest market for imported wine and spirits, after Mumbai, in the country.
