The city received 6.4 mm of rain till 5.30 pm, the India Meteorological Department said. The maximum temperature settled three notches above the season’s average at 37 degrees Celsius. Following the showers, the mercury dropped to 31.2 degrees at 5.30pm.
Severe water-logging was caused which led to massive traffic snarls in many parts of the city. There was water-logging beneath the Modi Mill flyover, which made it almost impossible for vehicles to ply.
This caused huge harassment for commuters as it was rush hour and people were left almost stranded on the road.
Water-logging also posed a huge problem near Ramakrishna Aashram Marg metro station and commuters moving towards the Sadar Bazar police station struggled for hours in the evening, said a source. He further added that commuters in Kashmere Gate ISBT and the Rajpur Road faced great difficulty, especially near the Tirath Ram Shah Hospital.
However, data provided by the central control room of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi shows that no cases of water-logging were registered till 4 pm on Thursday, except one between Lajpat Nagar 1 and Lajpat Nagar 2. The data also revealed that traffic snarls also occurred at Kamla Market and Jhandewalan due to trees that were uprooted after the rain on Thursday. Roop Nagar, Roshanara Road and the narrow lanes leading to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital in north Delhi were also affected.
The Ring Road stretch from Moolchand to Maharani Bagh witnessed severe congestion in the afternoon but it was cleared by evening, said a traffic official. He added that another severely affected stretch that was cleared by late evening was the one on Mathura Road, leading towards the Supreme Court.
