Heavy rains lash Uttarakhand again, as Bahuguna calls to rebuild state

Heavy rains lashed parts of Uttarakhand including the state capital on Thursday, as a centuries-old math was washed away by the surging waters of the Alaknanda river in Pauri district and about half-a-dozen houses collapsed due to cloudbursts in Chamoli district.
However, disaster management and mitigation centre said that there was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna on Thursday called for a collective effort to rebuild disaster-hit Uttarakhand and praised the people of the state who not only braved the June calamity but also offered help in rescuing others stranded in high altitude areas in the wake of the tragedy.
Bahuguna said with necessary co-operation from the Centre efforts are under way on a war footing to restore damaged roads, power and water supply network in the disaster hit areas of the state.
He expressed confidence that the collective effort of people will soon succeed in restoring the natural splendour of rain-ravaged Uttarakhand.
He asked people to come forward and lend a helping hand to the government in rebuilding a prosperous and secure Uttarakhand. He also heaped praise on the IAF, ITBP. Badkot in Uttarkashi district received 106mm of rains in the last 24 hours.
The historic Keshorai Math established in 1625 located on the banks of the Alaknanda was swept away by the river as it was in spate following heavy rains yesterday, Pauri district disaster management officer Ravneet Cheema said.
‘A wall is all that remains of the Math now,’ she said. Lashed by rains over the past few days the foundations of the centuries old structure gave in yesterday as it disappeared in the river in the afternoon, she said.
It has been raining in the district over the past few days with no let-up in rainfall even today swelling the Alaknanda river, Cheema said.
The Badrinath highway is closed due to debris from landslips at Kameda in Chamoli district where six houses have collapsed in Deval and Tharali areas and over half a dozen bridges have been swept away, an official said. Most rivers in the state were in spate including the Ganga at Haridwar which continued to flow close to the danger mark at 293.40 metres, DMMC authorities said.
In Gunal village of Uttarkashi district houses have begun to sink under the impact of rains with their fear-stricken occupants moving to safer places, an official said. Intermittent rains have also hampered road repair work by the BRO and PWD department in flood-hit areas of the state, officials here said.
A tragedy was averted yesterday in Haridwar district when a boat with 24 persons on board capsized in the Ganga near Luxor. However all of those on the boat were saved, official sources here said.
