Heating up the stage

Students at the National  School of Drama (NSD) are back on the stage to show off all that they have imbibed so far. It is summer, and they have once again kickstarted the Summer Theatre Festival.

The theatre festival, that started on Friday, will stage eight plays that will go on till most of June. The plays are all set and ready to enthrall the viewers, taking them further into the realm of drama.

Each play would be enacted for more than a day — at National School of Drama Lawns, Kamani Auditorium and Abhimanch in NSD.

The festival kicked off with the play Old Time. The cast had been practising it for nearly 40 days. Organised by the Repertory Company, NSD, the play is directed by Roysten Abel.
Old Town
is all about the performers in a carnival.

'It is a journey through 2000 years of difficulties and fun of the performers', says Abel.

Through the trajectory of the performers, the play tries to capture the various moods and expressions of artists as a performer.

The plays are in Hindi to accommodate a wider audience. Others to be staged are Ramu Ramanathan's Comrade Kumbhkaran which is directed by Mohit Takalkar. It is the comic story of a man obsessed with playing the role of Khumbhkaran in The Ramayana.

Anton Chekhov's Chekhov Ki Duniya will be directed by Ranjit Kapoor. Begum Ka Takia, directed by Yashraj Jadhav, is the story of two brothers — one a simpleton and the other ambitious.

The latter leaves for the city and gets involved with a courtesan who introduces him to new flavours of life. After achieving his dreams, he returns to his village to his brother lives and what unfolds is a plethora of unexpected emotions.

Others to be staged include Jaat Hi Poochho Sadhu Ki, Hamara Seher Us Baras, Blood Wedding, Aadamzaad and Panchlight.

So get ready to beat the summers, in true threatrical style.
