Health minister reaches out to striking employees

Health minister A K Walia on Monday announced that the Delhi government has agreed in principle to a 30 per cent hike in the remuneration of contractual employees working in the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP).
He informed that a recommendation to this effect has been sent to the government of India. An annual increment formula along with other benefits such as leave is also under consideration, he added. A section of the contractual staff has been on strike since 26 August demanding regularisation of their services and hike in remuneration.
The health minister exhorted the striking contractual employees to resume their duties, in order to serve TB patients. He said that TB patients have been finding it difficult in get medicines, which are to be administered by contractual health workers. He added that the city government is committed to the maintenance of uninterrupted healthcare services to TB patients under this national programme. It has made additional deployment of staff from other programmes to maintain these services. Fresh recruitments will be considered if the situation demands.
The Delhi government has appealed to the striking contractual staff to resume duty immediately, in the interest of the patients. The government has said that otherwise it would be left with no option but to resort to stern measures, including implementation of Essential Services Maintenance Act and termination of contract.
