Labelled as one of the most dependable and skilled climbers of the 1980s and the 90s, Subedar Amar Prakash was an inspiration for the mountaineering community.
He was part of all major expeditions like the Joint Indo-US Army Expedition to Mana, Multinational Army Expedition to Neelkanth, Kabru as part of Army Pre-Kanchenjunga Expedition, International Army Expedition to Nanda Devi, Joint Indo-British Army Expedition to Gorichen, HMI-Argentina Expedition to Kamet, Abi Gamin and Acancagua in Argentina.
Prakash had also climbed Mount Everest twice and is one of the first Indians to climb it from the difficult Kangshung Face.
He had also successfully led Indian Mountaineering Foundation sponsored expeditions to Mt Mulkila and Indrasan.
Prakash had served as a mountaineering instructor in the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling and in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali. Prakash had been the proud recipient of the Saurya Chakra, the National Adventure Award and the Indian Mountaineering Foundation Gold Medal.
Prakash was on a UN Mission in Haiti, a small island located in the Caribbean, South East of the USA and East of Cuba and had returned to India due to illness. Subedar Amar Prakash passed away on 31 August 2012.
The passing away of Subedar Amar Prakash was a shock to his climbing partners and the mountaineering fraternity and all adventure lovers throughout the country.
