HC sends notice to Imam Bukhari over illegal construction

The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Imam Bukhari and others on a petition filed by Suhail Ahmad, who alleged illegal construction in and around the Jama Masjid premises.

The court’s response came after petitioner Suhail Khan alleged that the Shahi Imam sanctioned several illegal structures within and outside the premises of the Jama Masjid. These structures, Ahmad alleges, were erected by the Imam and his family.

Justice Manmohan has issued notice to Imam of Jama Masjid and his three brothers about the issue and sought reply before next hearing. ‘Notice be served upon the three brother of Bhukhari through alternative means of substitutes service by way of publication and post the matter for 15 April before joint registrar for taking up issue,’ the court said. The petitioner has also alleged that commercial activities are going on through kiosks, parking facilities, etc., under these illegal structures. Earlier, Suhail had alleged that Bukhari constructed bathrooms for personal use, and has put up signboards reading ‘gents’, ‘ladies’ and ‘handicap’ on the doors to misguide  authorities.

‘If we already have bathrooms and a big pool inside Jama Masjid, what is the need for new construction? Also the new bathrooms have stairs, making them almost inaccessible for disabled people’, Suhail added.
