HC raps govt for failing to provide free books and uniform to EWS students

Irked over the status report filed by the government’s Directorate of Education (DoE), a bench of Justice BD Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul sought a fresh report from the government within two weeks. According to the status report filed by Delhi government, only 303 schools in the national capital have provided free books and uniforms to EWS students.

‘We are not happy with the status report filed by the Directorate of Education, it is very vague and does not provide requisite information,’ the bench said.

‘We direct the DoE to submit an affidavit telling the total number of students falling within EWS and disadvantaged group (DG) category,’ it said. The bench directed DoE to file separate information on government schools, private unaided schools and the schools not falling within this category.

It ordered DoE to inform the court about the total number of children who have received free books and uniforms this year. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by NGO Justice for All which had alleged that EWS and DG category students of unaided private schools were deprived of free books, uniforms and other study material.
