HC gives go-ahead to new three-lane RTR flyover

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed the public works department (PWD) to go ahead with its project to build a three-lane flyover parallel to the one existing at Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Marg on the Outer Ring Road here. A bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Siddharth Mridul, however, told the authorities involved that they should make operational their alternative routes and try to decongest the heavy traffic expected during the construction work there.

‘We allow you (authorities) to proceed with the work and invite the tender. Meanwhile, in two weeks time we want you to show the court how you are going to de-stress the two junctions, one connecting the Outer Ring Road and Nelson Mandela Marg and the other connecting Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road with a DDA road which will take traffic to NH-8 and the airport,’ the court said.

It said the authorities shall make an endeavour to make operational every route they intend to use during diversion of traffic.

The judges asked the authorities to decongest the two junctions after PWD gave a power point presentation on how they intend to divert the traffic during building of the three-lane flyover parallel to the one existing at RTR Marg on the Outer Ring Road here.

The court gave its observations while hearing a plea by resident welfare associations of Vasant Vihar challenging PWD’s decision to build a three-lane flyover.

Meanwhile, PWD and Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre informed the court that the project should not be halted for long as it is in public interest and the traffic will never be disturbed.

PWD also said they will complete the work in seven phases in 24 months on the stretch of 2.5 kms.
