Hazare’s view of Parliament

It is not surprising that Anna Hazare, in the company of former army chief V K Singh, has demanded that Parliament be disolved as politicians were serving themselves and not the country. This is a view shared by many people, particularly the middle class, and not just Anna Hazare. This expression of feelings is reflected in the popular movements against corruption that have arisen spontaneously and continue to thrive despite the government’s efforts at suppressing them. Government and party have made vicious personal attacks against those who have the courage to speak out against this evil, reminiscent of the days of the Emergency.

Many feel that those in power, who are headed by Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, are taking the people for a ride. Instead of cracking down on the corrupt, they are applauding them and cocking a snook at public sentiment. They have even promoted those against whom there are allegations of corruption, as in the current reshuffle. Amazingly, there is a barrage of falsehoods from the Congress in defence of such criminal elements who should rightly be in jail. The innumerable scams and  scandals and attempts at the expropriation of money have shocked the conscience of this nation but not affected the thick skinned lot in power. It is almost as if those with criminal tendencies in government are not fearful of the law and the action due against them. Not only have crores of rupees been expropriated from government funds but money is also being invested in dubious and wasteful projects from which it goes into the pockets of closet coteries and kitchen cabinets. Investments in white elephants are are nothing but a form of money laundering. Government finances show gross mismanagement, and irregularites are not just a result of the incompetence but also of the greed and dishonesty of those in power. Never in the history of India have party spokesmen dared to suggest that there should be unholy pacts between opposing parties not to investigate the crimes of politicians and their progeny. These persons have not even been chided by their party bosses for making such comments. The scams by the ruling politicians unearthed so far are but the tip of the iceberg. There many more skeletons in the cupboard which need to be unearthed. People are fed up of this mess. There is a growing demand for this Parliament to be dissolved and replaced by one more mindful of public probity and the sentiments of the people.
