The college administration is pinning hope on the new Yagyashala to instill Vedic culture among GenNext students.
The Yagyashala, which will be inaugurated on 5 September by DAV College managing committee president Punam Suri, is the first of its kind in the history of Delhi University.
According to VK Kawatra, the principal of the college, students will be asked to participate in the ceremony. ‘In the competitive world, students take a lot of stress. The Yagyashala will help in managing the stress levels.’
While unfolding the uses of Yagyashala, Kawatra added, ‘Students would be taught about the importance of mantras as well as importance of environment during the havans.’ Reacting on the havan issue, Nandita Narain, president of Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA), said that it’s against the institutional practices and it will pave way for other colleges to follow suit. Narain advised the college management to not promote religions practices inside educational institutions.
Refusing to take intervene in the matter, the DUTA president said, ‘Since DUTA is a multi-party body, it will not do anything on this issue, but there are several other organisations that will do a lot against the promotion of religions practices in colleges.’ Rejecting the charges of DUTA president, Inder Mohan Kapahy, who is a founder member of BJP-affiliate National Democratic Teachers’ Front, said, ‘There is nothing wrong in it as the Hansraj College is based on the principles of Arya Samaj. People should not oppose it as the college is not making it mandatory for students to participate in the havan.’
The college was founded by the DAV College Managing Committee on 26 July, 1948 in the memory of the educator Mahatama Hans Raj.
