However, within 24 hours of the incident, three people were arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in the incident.
According to police, the incident was reported at around 8 pm from outside BSP councillor Shaukeen Malik’s residence at Ashok Vihar colony in Loni. As narrated by the eye witnesses, a white Maruti Swift car pulled up infront of his courtyard and reportedly as many as three to four men opened fire on Malik from the moving car. They fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Police reached the spot immediately after receiving a call from his neighbour and rushed Malik to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead. His body was immediately sent for a postmortem examination, said a police official.
By Saturday morning, three people were arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in the incidence. They were identified as Aman Chhotu, Rakesh and Harendra.
‘Meanwhile, it also emerged that the victim was involved in a prolonged dispute with the three of them regarding a piece of land at Nithaura village in Ghaziabad,’ said Shakil Malik, brother of Shaukeen.
The three accused are being interrogated and the police are investigating the alleged murder.
Malik was also a social activist from Loni and was serving his second term as the councillor from ward number 41.
In a similar incident that took place around two weeks ago, a Congress leader and former councillor of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation died after being shot at five times right outside his residence at Shastri Nagar.
