Gurgaon authorities to enhance road safety

In bid to curtail accidents in the city, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is going to install better quality reflectors, signage boards and cat-eye lights on major roads within ten days. Such facilities will be installed on Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG), Patudi, New Railway, Kherki Daula , MDI Chowk and others leading roads for better connectivity and a safer driving experience.

The initiative was taken by Praveen Kumar, commissioner of MCG. After inspection of city roads on Monday night from 11 pm to 2 am, he noticed that these roads were full of pot holes without reflectors, street lights, signage boards, barriers and speed breakers without white paint.

‘We found that some motorists had earlier met with accidents during night hours on account of low visibility on the darkest roads. During night inspection, I also found the same and ordered senior officials from MCG to take control of the situation within 10 days’, said Praveen Kumar.

According to Gurgaon police, as many as 1,403 people have lost their lives in over a thousand road accidents in the city in the past three years. They include 552 pedestrians, 462 motorcyclists and 81 cyclists. These accidents were caused due to over-speeding, drunk driving and the lack of infrastructure, such as subways, roads without reflectors or even foot over-bridges. Some of the most common accident spots on National Highway-8, which account for 457 fatal accidents over the past three years, have been identified as Narsinghpur village, Bilaspur Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Khandsa bus stop, Hero Honda Chowk, Kherki Dhaula toll plaza, Raj Nagar Mor, Sarhaul toll plaza and Manesar Ghati.
