Gurgaon admin bans tube wells in pvt colonies to save ground water

The colonies were also directed to submit a status report within a week to the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The order, issued by Shekhar Vidyarthi, DC, Gurgaon, said that HUDA has enhanced the capacity of treatment plants and treated water is available in abundance to supply water-affected areas. ‘We have ordered the closure of all registered tube wells used for the supply of drinking water in private colonies, which were developed by them. This will stop further depletion of underground water in Gurgaon, which was a matter of great concern’, Vidyarthi said.

HUDA will provide the bulk of the water to the colonies after they submit a status report on their requirements. According to Vidyarthi, private colonies are required to submit status report of water supply and if there are any shortcomings, and submit an action plan in consultation with the concerned Resident Welfare Association (RWA) to alleviate such shortcomings.

‘Earlier water was supplied though two rising mains of 900 mm and 1100 mm in the city and at that time there was scarcity of water. In that period, supply from tube wells were allowed. But now, a third rising main of 1600 mm has been laid, which mainly supplies water to Zone-III and water is used excessively there’, Vidyarthi said.

Earlier two rising mains were now used for Zone-I and II only. If required, HUDA will install boosters. In total, now 104 MGD treated water is generated. He claimed that availability of water was more and there were fewer takers. In DLF and some other colonies, the water supply system was distributed pocket wise through tube wells. Now, HUDA will provide enough water in bulk at one spot for all pockets.
