Former beauty queen and AAP leader Gul Panag has sparked Twitter debate after raising question over induction of women in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The row was kicked after AAP candidate, who had lost to BJP’s Kirron Kher from Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, posted a question ‘Also, can women join the RSS (largest voluntary cultural organisation in the world, not like ‘RSS feed’)? AskingForaFriend.
Panag, who had competed in the Miss Universe pageant, had asked the question on 14 August and since got hundreds of responses. Some of the replies are nasty, some just inquisitive.
What created even more buzz was that she later openly appreciated prime minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech. Some Tweeples hazarded a guess to her initial question.
‘Yup as far as I know. There is a female wig. (sic),’ remarked one Twitter user.
Panag, known for her sharp wit, among the Twitteratti, retorted: ‘ok. Real hair or synthetic?’
Another user then said, ‘The parent company RSS is an exclusively male organisaion...’
‘Not so sure on that. RSS is a male domain. Who are female RSS leaders of note.’ added another one. The trolls then even took a swipe at Panag. ‘I think she should personally visit the Shakhas and see how it works,’ it said.
Even as this debate was raging Gul went on to praise Modi in her 16 August tweet. ‘Must read for those who havent seen or read - full text of the speech. Impressive. Touches all the right chords. Kudos.’
In her reaction to these tweets and their threads, Panag minced no words in her praise for Modi. ‘I genuinely found his speech impressive. But the implementations of those promises would have to be looked into,’ she said.
The actor, who has nearly 9.5 lakh followers on Twitter, had in a series of messages in 2012 backed Modi for the country’s top job.
