Two people, including a Gujarati scrap dealer, were rescued on Friday from Chandni Chowk here, and a member of a Mewati gang arrested after the police laid out a trap, an official said. Rs 10 lakh was demanded by the abductors for their release.
The Mewati gang known as ‘The Gang of 10’ had abducted the Ahmedabad-based businessman and his associate at gunpoint on February 3. They had called up the businessman’s father in London and demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh, which was supposed to be sent through a hawala (clandestine) dealer in Chandni Chowk.
The police laid out a trap and arrested Javed (26) who had come here to collect the ransom. He holds a diploma in engineering. The businessman and his associate were rescued and one person arrested, said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
The gang, earlier, was also allegedly involved in a series of abductions and always targeted rich businessmen from mostly Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, police said.
The rescued businessman deals in metal scraps and has a website with his contact details. In late January, the alleged abductors pretended to be scrap dealers and negotiated a deal with the businessman.
