Gujarat leads in solar energy production: Vala

State finance minister Vajubhai Vala has claimed that the state is leading the country in production of solar power, producing 600 MW electricity through solar system.

'Conventional power production has become very expensive as material like coal has to be imported from foreign and time has come to generate electricity through non-conventional source,' Vala said while inaugurating 50 KW solar power grid connection at Rajkot Municipal Corporation's (RMC) east zone office last evening.

'Nearly 1200 MW electricity is produced in the entire country by solar system in which Gujarat produces 600 MW electricity,' he said.

The state government has done well in generating solar power under Narendra Modi's able leadership, he added.

According to RMC official, RMC's east zone office consumes around 150 to 200 units daily and it will be able to save 40 to 45 units daily once the solar power grid system starts functioning.

Rajkot was selected to be developed as a 'solar city' by central government in 2010 and the civic body is keen to reduce electricity bills of all RMC offices by setting up solar power system, the official added.
