Gujarat kite festival begins in Mumbai

Mumbai came out in flying colours when around 100 ‘kitists’ from 40 countries showcased their fantasy kites and kite-flying skills at the 25th edition of the International Kite Festival, Gujarat that is being highlighted in its silver jubilee celebrations at Malabar Hill in Mumbai on Monday, according to Kamlesh Patel, chairman, Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL).

Patel told mediapersons that the foreign kite-flyers will be coming in from UK, France, Italy, Singapore, Switzerland, Spain, Netherlands, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Curacao, Ukraine, Israel, China, Belgium, New Zealand, Cambodia, Lithuania and Malaysia for the celebrations which will cover over the month also Delhi, Vadodara, Surat, Saputara, Modhera, Dhordo (White Rann), Somnath and Mandvi beach before culminating on Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront on 12 and 13 January.

The Monday  kite-flying event, which will also kick off in Delhi’s Connaught Place, will feature non-conventional kites of different shapes and sizes, he said adding that the first Kite Festival was inaugurated 25 years ago by Mt Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary. ‘While heritage properties like the City Walls will be sites for kitists, we are also holding ‘Night Kite Flying’ and adding new destinations for this event every year with this year featuring Somnath and Vadodara,’ he said.
