Guj to have first medical devices park: Ananth Kumar

With the objective to control the prices of medical devices, the Centre is mulling to set up medical devices parks on the lines of Make in India campaign. Talking to reporters, Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar said that even though there is a steep rise in the demand of medical instruments, the presence of indigenous medical devices is negligible in the country.

“The report submitted by the task force constituted on promotion of domestic production of high end medical devices and pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment has suggested setting up of medical devices parks. The ministry is committed to provide best medical devices to patients and that too at affordable rate,” the Union Minister said.

Kumar also announced setting up of a first ever medical devices park in Gujarat, which is known as the hub of pharma majors. “Talks are going on with Tamil Nadu government to set up second medical devices park in Chengalpattu,” the Union Minister said after releasing the task force report.

Kumar further added that only 30 per cent of the country’s requirement of medical devices is being met through indigenous production, and that of low end category. “The government is taking several steps to boost the domestic production of high end medical devices and pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment. The NIPER, Ahmedabad will be the nodal institute for undertaking research and development in the area,” Kumar said, adding that the recommendations made by the task force would be implemented in a time bound manner.

Replying to a question, the Union Minister said that need is being felt to have a separate department to handle the issues of facilitation and regulation of high end medical devices and pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment, as their consumption is increasing very fast and there is need to make India self-dependent in the sector.
