Guj riots: Nanavati panel clears Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been exonerated of any culpability in the communal riots which started in the wake of burning of train coaches occupied by Kar Sewaks at Godhra junction in 2002. The judicial commission headed by Justice GT Nanawati on Tuesday submitted its report to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel at her residence.

Though the contents of the report are yet to be made public, according to government broadcaster All India Radio, it has given a clean chit to the prime minister. The commission took 24 extensions before the report was finally handed over to the chief minister.

In 2008, the inquiry commission submitted one part of its findings about the Godhra train burning
incident. It had then concluded that the burning of the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express near Godhra railway station was a planned conspiracy.

The commission also investigated roles of then chief minister Narendra Modi, as per the amended terms of reference, his cabinet colleagues of that time, senior government and police officers along with functionaries of some right wing organisations during the period of Gujarat 2002 riots.
