GT Road turns into 'grand' parking lot

The Grand Trunk Road in east Delhi, also referred to as GT Road, has become a 'grand' place for parking trucks. Despite special orders given by Satyender Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, to remove the unwanted vehicles, no action has been taken as yet.

Earlier, illegal encroachments of various buildings on the GT Road were demolished to make the road broader for facilitating traffic. And during the recent MCD elections, the road was relaid. The illegal establishments that had encroached the GT Road might have been removed, but they have merely given way to trucks, Gramin Sewa vehicles, private vehicles, and auto rickshaws.

The illegal parking has led to traffic jams all through the day. It gets worse after 10 pm. The one-lane parking turns into two-lane parking, causing much grievance to the commuters. Huge trucks are parked on the main road. It is also alleged that the drivers often consume alcohol in the 'parking lot'.

Few days ago, the red light area under the GT flyover was barricaded to avoid traffic jam. A lot of Gramin Sewa vehicles, auto rickshaws and rickshaws park themselves near the red light area, ready to pick up passengers. This had blocked the traffic. The move was much appreciated by the commuters has it had eased the congestion. But, three days ago, barricades were removed without any reason.

To make matters worse, customers visiting the commercial establishments on the main road, such as banks and automobile dealers park their vehicles haphazardly, adding to the existing chaos. Public transport junctions – Shadara railway station, bus stand and Metro station – located on the GT Road, draw a huge crowd adding further to the mess.

In short, the situation has come to a point, where people, if they could, bypass GT Road, one of the important roads of the Capital, which connects Ghaziabad and Delhi. Traffic in GT Road could be smoothened a lot if those parked vehicles are removed as per the Joint CP's instructions.
