Grewal suicide: Crime Branch arrests two

A day after the suicide case of ex-serviceman was transferred to the Crime Branch of Delhi Police, two persons who were with him minutes before the suicide have been detained, sources said.

On Friday, a team went to Singhani Village of Bhiwani — the hometown of Ram Kishan Grewal (70), the deceased. According to sources,  Rajkumar and Jagdish were detained from there and are being brought to Delhi.

The source further added that both were with the deceased minutes before he allegedly consumed poison. Rajkumar is a social activist and Jagdish is an ex-serviceman. “They have been detained to enquire about the exact sequence of events to ascertain the facts with the findings in the probe,” the source added.

Meanwhile, teams are verifying the authenticity of the suicide note left behind by Grewal and are examining the toxicology report. The CCTV cameras are also being examined, police said.

In a related development, the announcement of Rs 1 crore compensation to Grewal’s family has raised several eyebrows. In this regard, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, has demanded the Lieutenant Governor to constitute an expert committee for policy formulation compensation of Rs 1 crore given by the Delhi government to the family of the “martyrs.” He also demanded that the LG assign the expert committee to clearly define “martyr” and ensure scrutiny by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

As per the policy of the Delhi government, there are three conditions for awarding Rs 1 crore compensation. Firstly, the person should be a member in “uniform” force like Delhi Police, Armed Forces and the like; secondly, he must have laid down his life while performing his duty and thirdly, he should be a native of Delhi.
