It may be noted that the NGT, in September, had formed a committee following the complaints of massive concretisation across the city. The Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam and Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) had, however, denied the same.
As per the report revealed by NGT, commission has claimed that after visiting various areas of the city in presence of the applicant, Akash Vashistha, and following the pictures of concretisation, it clearly reflects violation of green norms of the government authorities. ‘After inspecting green belts in Sectors 2, 6, 8, 9 14 & 15, Nehru Nagar, Kavi Nagar to Raj Nagar, ALT crossing, Hapur Chungi and other parts, the entire green belt was found lying in a pathetic condition. Most of the region has been concertised with interlocking tiles and bricks. The parks and other spaces have also been concretised in a manner that there is no scope of water recharge,’ said the commission’s report.
Talking about the hazardous effects of concretisation, the petitioner said that it would lead to massive rise in temperatures, as concretised surfaces get heated up faster and loses heat at night very slowly. Concretised/impervious ground surfaces prevent percolation of rain water into the ground by as much as 90 percent and vastly reduce the catchment area. Thus, it prevents ground water recharge.
‘It is very unfortunate and shameless on their part that the two agencies concretised every bit of fragile earth with concrete interlocking tiles/bricks and cement out of their sheer greed and corruption. They did it as if there would be no life on earth after them,’ claimed the petitioner.
