Govt wants to include anti-doping lessons in CBSE curriculum

Informed sources said the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) has already started coordinating with CBSE schools and School Games Federation of India both at national and regional levels for such courses.

Several anti-doping measures through sport events is in the pipeline where students and coaches will be given professional training on the side effects of doping and how to keep students, who want to pursue sports as a career, away from such malpractice.

‘The ministry of youth affairs and sports recently held a meeting with the NADA officials and prepared a list of do’s and don’ts on doping, which will be circulated in all schools. We have decided to conduct this course in a phase manner to cover maximum number of schools,’ ministry sources said.

‘The course will improve the awareness levels of students through the school coaches to cater to young athletes. Keeping special focus on rural sports centres, various anti-doping awareness workshops have already been conducted in the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centres (STC) in rural areas,’ he said.

Prime minister Narendra Modi has taken this initiative under ‘Dope Free’ mission in sports after several such incidents at the international level have left the country in a shame. ‘Our aim is to get rid of this (doping) menace and create a clean and healthy environment for sports. This year till July nearly 60 sportspersons were punished on the charges of doping,’ sports ministry sources said.

It was learnt that an expert committee, comprise of doctors, lawyers and eminent sports persons has already been formed to formulate anti-doping courses. This group will coordinate with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and organise Continuing Medical Education (CME) on anti-doping measures to know about the prohibited substances and prescription drugs for medical practitioners.

Also, committee members will develop all relevant awareness materials to meet the issues of Indian sportspersons and to develop education material. Those who are competing athletes, tailor made awareness-cum-education materials will also be prepared in association with National Sports Federations (NSF).

A dedicated helpline for providing consultation to the athletes and coaches on the use of supplements and medicines is also proposed by the PM and expected to be launched soon.
