Govt to focus on children with clubfoot

The Delhi government has decided to expand treatment facilities in the city for children born with clubfoot, a deformity in which the foot is twisted inward with the toes pointing down.

The Health department has already decided to extend its partnership with NGO Cure International which has been helping designated hospitals by providing technical expertise and equipment in offering treatment to the affected children.

So far over 2,200 children, suffering from clubfoot, have been cured under the phase-I of the programme involving the NGO in the last three years, health department officials said.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said treatment facilities in the eight designated hospitals, currently offering treatment for clubfoot, will be expanded under second phase of the programme.

She was speaking at a function organised to award school children who participated in a clubfoot awareness campaign.

Delhi Health Minister A K Walia and Chairperson of Cure International India Belinda Bennet were also present.

The officials said over 50,000 children are born with clubfoot in India every year which include 500 in Delhi.

Dikshit said her government is committed to provide best possible treatment to children suffering from clubfeet.

In Delhi, the treatment of clubfoot is available in Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya, Maulana Azad Medical College, Lok Nayak Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhaya Hospital, Mararishi Balmiki Hospital, Kalawati Saran Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital and St Stephens Hospital.

Dikshit also launched a state-level awareness programme on clubfoot.
