Govt survey finds 2.66 lakh people unemployed in Capital

Out of the total employed persons, about 56.24 lakh persons were employed in the urban area and 0.82 lakh in rural area. Out of the total employed people, the number of male were 51.66 lakh while the female stood way behind at 5.40 lakh, according to the 68th Round of National Sample Survey (2011-12), prepared by Directorate of Economics and Statistics on employment and unemployment situation in Delhi.
‘Major source of earnings of about 22.19 lakh households (52.68 per cent of the total) was from regular wage or salary. Whereas, source of earning of about 15 to 46 lakh households (36.70 per cent) was from self-employment,’ the survey stated.
It also revealed that out of 2.66 lakh unemployed persons, about 2.12 lakh were male and remaining 0.54 lakh were female.
‘Out of 2.66 lakh unemployed persons, about 2.50 lakh (93.84 per cent) were in the category of 15-29 years and remaining persons were in other age groups. Of the numbers of unemployed persons, about 0.07 lakh (3 per cent of the total) were illiterate. About 0.15 lakh were literate but below primary level, around 0.89 lakh were primary, middle and secondary pass and 1.56 lakh were higher secondary and above,’ the survey report stated.
The unemployment rate in the urban area of the national capital is 40 per thousand persons in labour force as compared to 34 per thousand at the national level. The unemployment rate varies from state to state. It is 42 in Haryana, 41 in Uttar Pradesh, 40 in Himachal Pradesh, 70 in Jammu and Kashmir, 64 in Chandigarh and 43 per thousand in the urban area of Andhra Pradesh.
The survey revealed that out of 111.16 lakh persons, about 51.62 lakh (46 per cent) were attending educational institutions, 39.28 lakh (35 per cent) were engaged in domestic duties, 4.36 lakh (4 per cent) were pensioners and about 0.80 lakh (0.72 per cent) were not able to work due to disability.
