‘Govt should not raise indirect taxes’

The government should raise revenue by increasing taxes on tobbacco and alcohol and pass on the benefits to other sectors. These thoughts have been on the minds of many and on Thursday, Rajeev Sharma, a businessman from Preet Vihar in East Delhi echoed the same on the eve of the Budget.
‘The government should not burden the common man with increase in indirect taxes on other products hoping to generate more revenue. The previous government had already burdened us with unnecessary taxes. Rather, it should raise the excise duty on tobacco, alcohol and other such products to enhance its revenues’, Sharma said.

Rajeev and his family has very high aspirations from the first budget of Modi government. ‘All these things Modi has inaugurated so far are pending works of previous government. The upcoming budget will be his main challenge. One the one hand he has to tackle rising inflation and on the other he also has to look after the deflating growth graph’, said Gauri Sharma, a school-teacher and wife of Rajeev.

The couple is of the opinion that the budget should address the problems prevailing in three sectors — namely  health, education and real estate. ‘A major part of a family’s income is spent on these three things only. All of them has gone out of bounds for the common man. Lets just hope this budget brings these things to fore’, she said. They also believe that the government should invest more in its own institutions and stop privatisation of higher education.
