The government on Monday revised the wage rates of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with effect from 1 April with the maximum wage of Rs 214 been fixed for Haryana and minimum of Rs 135 been fixed for north eastern states. In a statement in the Rajya Sabha, rural development minister Jairam Ramesh specified the wage rate payable to unskilled workers under MNREGA Act.
The notification regarding revising MNREGA wage rates is linked to the Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labour (CPI-AL) from 1 April every year. In March 2011, after inter-ministerial consultations, the government had decided that the revision of MNREGA wage rates indexed to the CPIAL would be done annually. The decision to index MGNREGA wage rate to CPI-AL was done to ensure that MGNREGA workers are protected against inflation. As per the recent wage revision, apart from Rs 214 being paid to MGNREGA workers in Haryana it is followed by Rs 210 and Rs 209 in the UTs of Andaman Nicobar and Chandigarh respectively.
