Even as the mercury soars to 44.9 degree celsius across the national capital, the city is reeling under severe power cuts.
With an eye on the increasing power cuts in the city, the Delhi government has reviewed the power situation. In a meeting on Wednesday, principal secretary Shakti Sinha (Power) exhorted the discoms to pull up their socks to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity during the summer months, as the availability of power is higher than the peak demand.
He also stated that difference between the availability and peak demand had been hovering between 500 to 800 MW approximately. With this huge quantity of surplus power available, there is no ground for power cuts, he said, adding that the government would not tolerate such load shedding.
Sinha also stated that the load shedding might have been taking place purely on account of technical faults, which are to be taken care off by the respective discoms.
The discoms, particularly BSES Rajdhani and BSES Yamuna Power Ltd have been told to pull up their socks and rectify the local faults immediately as long power cuts have been reported in areas where these two companies supply power, an official said.
They have also been told to keep round-the-clock manpower in order to rectify technical faults and to minimise the response time in case of complaints on account of load shedding due to technical reasons.
Sinha warned the discoms that the government would not tolerate any delay in rectifying technical faults and load shedding despite the availability of surplus power in the capital.
The searing heat on Wednesday pushed the power demand in the city to over 4,955 MW, the highest for this year.
The discoms were told that the city has sufficient power arrangement to meet the demand, hence, load shedding is totally unacceptable.
Power cuts has resulted in the government failing to keep its word of providing 24x7 uninterrupted power supply, in spite of available electricity.
The discoms have also been told to take the advice of the government seriously and to act swiftly to avoid any situation leading to load shedding.
