‘Govt preparing detailed plan for hundreds of unauthorised colonies’

While the central government is pushing hard to announce regularisation of unauthorised colonies before model code of conduct is implemented, the babus are clueless over how the basic amenities would be provided in such colonies.

However, the government said it was preparing a ‘detailed plan’ for unauthorised colonies. “As per the directions of the Lieutenant-Governor, we are preparing a detailed plan on how relief on certain fronts could be provided to the residents of over 800 unauthorised colonies,” said Rajendra Kumar, secretary of Delhi’s urban development department during a press briefing on Tuesday.

He, however could not explain how the facilities would be provided in the highly congests unauthorised colonies. Earlier, the Union UD Minister M Venkaiah Naidu discussed the issue of regularising unauthorised colonies.

Surprisingly, the DJB also confessed there is no ‘vision plan’ to provide potable water in such colonies. The chief executive officer of Delhi Jal Board Vijay Kumar who was also present in the briefing said, “We don’t have any vision to provide potable water in next summer season.” Kumar further said DJB produces 835 MGD (million gallon) per day, while the city’s water requirement is at least 1,080 MGD per day.

Kumar also could not explain on how it planned to minimise water leakage, which is around 38 to 40 per cent of treated water. He also said the board has installed 20 water ATMs in various areas of the Capital, where laying of pipe line was not technically feasible. “We plan to install 60 more water ATMs across Delhi,” he said.
