Govt plans to ‘simplify’ organ donation in Capital

The health department of Delhi government is preparing a ‘standard operating procedure’ to regulate and simplify the process of organ donation in the national capital. 

In a meeting on Friday, the health department and top officers of Delhi Police discussed various issues and problems related to ‘unchecked’ organ donation at clinics and hospitals. They are preparing the procedures to streamline ‘voluntarily and cadaver donations’ where legal aspects can be minimised.
‘As per rules, voluntarily and cadaver donations are allowed, but it involves number of legal formalities. To expedite the process and to regulate it, we are making proper guidelines wherein the preferences would be given to those people, who have been waiting for organs for long or in emergency situation,’ said a government official. The official added police have been asked felicitate the process so that the people in need of organ can get it within the required time-frame.

The department is planning to make it mandatory for every hospital, which has Intensive Care Unit, to have a transplant coordinator. Sources said that so far only 10 centres can perform organ transplantation. The officials said that the state government has also started an online facility (www.dorso.org) for organ donation.
