In <g data-gr-id="21">wake</g> of recent decisions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) taken to control air pollution, the Ministry of Road Transport is also in <g data-gr-id="22">process</g> to introduce electric auto-rickshaws in the country.
According to MoRTH Minister Nitin Gadkari, the government is considering converting all diesel run auto-rickshaws into electric-rickshaws. “We have prepared a model which has been sent for the feasibility test. The government would allow conversion only after getting the report, Gadkari said.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday to highlight the achievements of his ministry in one-year, Gadkari said, “The government is also working on converting diesel buses particularly those ferrying schoolchildren into battery buses. We have even made changes in Motor Vehicles Act (1988) to recognise the e-rickshaw, which has been passed by both the houses of Parliament.”
Experts have hailed the Gadkari’s move, which has been taken to control the rising air pollution across the country. “The idea is not bad. If it works well, it will prove very effective in controlling the Air Quality Index (AQI),” said an official of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
