In a first of its kind, the government is mulling to build multi-level parking depots for DTC buses. Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has also given his nod for construction of multi-level parking of DTC buses.
The transport department was suffering with acute parking crunch and after the court’s order of shifting the Millennium Depot, the department officials came out with a plan for optimum utilisation of the available space for parking of buses.
‘The LG gave a green signal to the project on Saturday,’ said a transport department official.
The construction agencies of Delhi government like Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructural Corporation (DSIIDC), Public Works Department (PWD) and others have been asked to prepare a study report on the possibility of construction of such parking spaces.
‘The parking spaces in Delhi for DTC buses are very limited as compared to other states. The only option available with us is to go vertical. However, very few DTC depots are suitable for such multi-level parking,’ the official said.
The study report will be submitted to L-G before moving forward with the proposal. Currently, the DTC operate a fleet of around 5,500 buses and is further planning to buy 11,000 more low-floor buses to meet city’s demands.
