Govt orders CBI probe into Nido Tania’s death

‘The family wants that the investigation should be conducted by CBI. So, we have decided to hand over the case to CBI,’ home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters after Nido’s family met him.
Shinde said he has assured that justice will be given to the family and guilty will be punished.

Earlier, the victim’s father Nido Pavitra and other close family members had a 15-minute meeting with Shinde during which they placed their demands, including a CBI probe.

‘The home minister gave us a patient hearing. We also requested him to do the needful to ensure security of people from northeast living different parts of the country,’ Pavitra, a Congress MLA in Arunachal Pradesh, told reporters.

Meanwhile, Delhi police  on Tuesday told a court here that murder charges have been slapped against four persons, one of whom was arrested on Tuesday morning, in connection with the youth’s death.

Accused Sunny Uppal, Pawan, Sunder and Farman have been booked in the case, police told Metropolitan Magistrate Pawan Kumar.

The court was also told that according to the post-mortem examination report, Tania died due to serious internal head injuries.

Initially, Pawan, Sunder and Farman were arrested 3 February and booked under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for passing racist remarks on Tania. The three were later sent to judicial custody.

Sunny Uppal was presented before the court on Tuesday which sent him to judicial custody till 25 February.

The 19-year-old Tania was beaten up by shopkeepers in south Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area on 29 January following a row over his appearance and clothing. He died in a hospital the next day.
The Delhi High Court was on Monday informed that Tania received serious injuries on his head, lungs and face.

‘There were nine internal injuries and the nature of external injuries were simple. The injuries in the head led to death. There was no poisoning found in the body,’ police told the court, reading from the post-mortem report. The special court hearing the bail plea of Pawan and Sundar adjourned it for 14 February after the defence counsel sought time for preparing his argument.

Victim’s parents meet Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi:

‘We met Rahul Gandhi and have made it clear that if initiatives are not taken by the government to curb discrimination against the northeast people, then things are not going to change,’ Tania’s mother said. ‘I appeal to all businessmen that they should come forward to help the government in putting up hoardings and posters against discrimination,’ she added.
