Wary about any adverse impact on the electoral fortunes of the BJP in the poll-bound state of Rajasthan, the party’s top leadership on Wednesday came to defend its leader of Opposition in the state, Gulab Chand Kataria, who has been charge-sheeted in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case.
Expressing the support of the party for Kataria, BJP president Rajnath Singh, Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley and Rajasthan state president Vasundhara Raje Scindia, who does not share a very cordial relationship with Kataria, jointly held a press conference rejecting the charges against Kataria and calling it a Congress conspiracy.
‘The CBI chargesheet against Kataria is without any basis. He is known for his propriety and credibility. There is not a shred of truthful evidence against him. The case is being pursued by the CBI with the intention of implicating senior BJP leaders at the behest of the Congress,’ alleged Jaitley.
The chargesheet against Kataria has come at a time when assembly elections in the state are due in November. Kataria has significant influence in the Mewar region of the state.
Trying to turn the table on the Congress, Jaitley produced a document claiming it to be a CBI note which suggested that the BJP general secretary Amit Shah was booked and arrested by the CBI in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case so that the Gujarat chief minister could be targeted.
Jaitley also produced an opinion given by Attorney General Goolam E Vahanvati on 27 May 2011 in the Rajendra Rathore case. The former BJP minister in Rajasthan was booked by the CBI in a fake encounter involving bootlegger Dara Singh.
The BJP leaders said that Kataria despite the charge-sheet would continue as Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and the case will have no impact on its electoral prospects. Jaitley also dismissed the recently constituted GoM on making CBI independent of political interference and said this was nothing but an eye wash.
