Govt launches drive against hoarding, 42 traders prosecuted

The Department of Food and Supplies constituted 70 teams comprising of officers from the department, inspectors, Legal Metrology officers and Delhi Police Personnel. They have also planned to continue raids for the next one week.
‘The teams prosecuted 42 traders for violation of Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. The violators face imprisonment up to a period of seven years if convicted by the Court of Law,’ said the Commissioner Food and Supply, SS Yadav.
The raids were carried on the directions of the Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung. ‘Directions were issued to the department to take strict actions against people indulging in hoarding of these essential commodities on Wednesday,’ said Yadav.
The officer also said that Jung has directed the department to start sale of onions at 200 different locations across the city from Thursday onwards.
The Lieutenant Governor also carried out review meetings on the arrangements for procurement of onions by National
Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and sale of onions through 380 Safal outlets in Delhi.
Jung also emphasized on keeping the people informed of the prices and locations where onions and potatoes are being sold by government mobile vans.
