Govt issues clarification on KISS ‘scam’

In a reply to the report of Millennium Post, published on 9 January 2013 titled Delhi govt all set to KISS a scam in the name of educating the poor, Delhi government has stated that the charges of Rs 5,000 per month per child in a residential school is not exorbitant.

Standing by its decision, the government further clarified that the monthly charges at the Asha Kiran Home for Mentally Restarted comes to Rs 7,224 per child.

‘The city government may also like to submit that monthly charges of Rs 5,000 is not exorbitant as the school is going to be a residential one. The DPS (Delhi Public School), not residential school, is charging Rs 3,000 per month per child. Hence the charges of Rs 5,000 per month does not seem to be exorbitant,’ read the reply of the government, sent to Millennium Post, on Friday.

Though the government said the fee is not a consultancy to KISS, it could not explain whether it would include the expenses to be made towards the mess charge, salary of teachers, staff and other operational costs. A press statement released by the government on 14 May 2012, however, read, ‘The city government will provide infrastructure and financial assistance to run the school for five years and after that the school is expected to be self sustaining.’
