Govt hikes assistance to poor patients

Delhi Government on Monday relaxed norms for providing financial assistance to poor patients suffering from life threatening diseases like kidney and liver ailments, and hiked the maximum aid to Rs five lakh from existing Rs 2.5 lakh.
The city government in September last year had set up the Delhi Arogya Kosh (DAK) with an initial corpus of Rs 10 crore and in her budget speech in May, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had announced hiking it to Rs 110 crore.
The decision to relax norms to provide assistance to poor patients was taken at a cabinet meeting presided over by Dikshit.
Dikshit said the cabinet has decided to increase limit of annual family income from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh for being eligible to get assistance under the scheme. As per existing norm an applicant has to be a resident of Delhi for the last three years for availing the benefits of DAK.
‘The need was felt to enhance the effectiveness and usefulness of Delhi Arogya Kosh in order to provide a helping hand to more needy poor people of Delhi,’ she said.
So far 46 patients have been granted a total of Rs 41.43 lakh assistance under the scheme.
Officials said government has decided to enhance upper limit of assistance for heart diseases, cancer and kidney diseases to Rs 5 lakh or 100 per cent of the estimated cost of the treatment whichever is less.
Similarly, upper limit of assistance available for disease requiring kidney transplant, bone-marrow transplant or liver transplant has been enhance from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh or 100 per cent of the estimated cost whichever is less.
NOW, BURARI TO GET 200-BED HOSPITAL
The Delhi government on Monday decided to set up a 200-bed hospital at Burari in north Delhi as part of efforts to ramp up the health infrastructure in the city.
A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
'We have decided to set up a 200-bed hospital in the Burari area to improve medical facilities,' Dikshit said.
Health Minister A K Walia said the cabinet had approved a budget of Rs 200 crore for construction of the hospital building.
He said the hospital would be constructed as per the green building concept.
The government has set a target of starting construction of seven other hospitals in the city during the current year.
Officials said four 200-bed hospitals would come up at Madipur, Siraspur, Hastsal and Ambedkar Nagar and two 100-bedded at Sarita Vihar and Pooth Khurd.
A 750-bed hospital is also being set up at Dwarka.
