Govt gears up to place GST Bill ahead of Monsoon session

The BJP-led government is also organising press conferences across the country to garner public support and create pressure on the main Opposition, Congress, sources said.

The Congress wants an 18% cap on the tax to be charged, scrapping of the proposal to levy an additional 1 per cent surcharge, apart from the Bill to specify formation of a GST Disputes Settlement Authority. 

The government’s previous attempts to get the GST Bill passed in Parliament have been hampered due the lack of numbers in the Upper House. The recent RS polls have raised hopes over the passage of GST.
