Govt doubles NCERT scholarships

“The last revision was carried out a decade back and 1,000 scholarships were awarded. From this year, we will give scholarships to 2,000 students,” Irani said at the 55th foundation day celebration of the NCERT, which conducts the examination.

Roughly, 3 lakh Class 10 students appear for the test every year, which comprises mental and scholastic tests. A scholarship of Rs 500 per month is given to all students studying in or above Class 11, except for <g data-gr-id="28">PhD</g> programme, wherein it is paid as per the UGC norms.

Emphasising on learning outcome in classes and the quality of teaching, the Minister said a nation-wide assessment survey would be carried out by the NCERT. The survey would cover all districts and classes to find deficiencies so as to “course correct” accordingly.

Directing NCERT officials to submit a detailed plan to conduct the survey in 15 days, Irani said: “The results of such a survey should be made available within the academic year itself and not over a period of one to two years to help us carry out the course corrections.” The assessment would be conducted subject-wise and emphasis would be laid on classes 3, 8 and 10. Irani has asked the NCERT's evaluation team to prepare the necessary survey plan and present its report within a week.
