Govt doing well, says Bengal Guv: Nandini Guha

One day after the West Bengal chief minister said that two years was not enough to assess the performance of her government,  Governor M K Narayanan said that the fledgeling government was doing fairly well and that ‘two years was short in the life of a Government’.

TMC MPs like Sisir Adhikari who hail from rural Bengal said that the government's performance in the agriculture sector has been commendable. ‘I believe Bengal tops in the utilisation of the 100 day work scheme among other states. Rice production has been at an all time high this year at around 40 lakh tonne.Rice has been distributed at Rs 2 a kilo in Jangalmahal. Kissan credit cards will also ensure that crop damage will be taken care of’, said Adhikari.  Scotching the negative impact of the Saradha scam, he said that the state government has looked after the urban poor by launching fair price medical shops in the city. MP Shatabdi Roy gives herself a pat on the back when she said that Member of Parliament Local Area Development Division (MPLAD) money has been fully utilised by the Government.  ‘I am elected from rural Birbhum. Child Mortality, primary education, water distribution have been focal areas in my constituency. I do not promise to build expensive roads but I have just gifted a Rs 35 lakh bridge to my electorate’, said Roy. Interestingly, about 58,000 ponds have been revived in the rural sector in the last two years.

On conditions of anonymity though, a TMC MLA said that the government needs to attract more investment in manufacturing. But as Banerjee put it, two years is simply not enough to give her a snazzy report card.

Rivals CPI (M) have also come out with a ‘charge-sheet’ seeking answers from Banerjee on a host of issues including the raging chit fund scam, farmer suicides and rising crime chart.
