Govt census for trees in full swing

These details came to light after residents carried out a tree census in their colonies and co-operative housing societies. Chief executive officer of Delhi Parks and Garden Society,  Dr SD Singh informed that the census is being conducted with the help of Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of Delhi under 80-20 per cent partnership. The department has also asked the three Municipal Corporations to submit the report of tree census done on their land.

So far the society has covered some 121 colonies in the census. The total number of trees in these colonies is about 20,222. Colonies of Mayur Vihar, Shalimar Bagh, Saraswati Vihar, Sunder Apartments and Vasant Kunj top the chart with about 500 trees in each colony.

With only 10 trees in the area, Ibrahimpur colony has the lowest number of trees. In non-residential areas, the maximum number of trees have been recorded from Dhaula Kuan and Khar Khari areas, with 796 and 1693 trees respectively.

‘We have provided containers of white paint, painting brushes and other logistics to the RWAs for this. We had launched the scheme about one and a half year back and now we are witnessing the results. This is a true government-public partnership. With the involvement of the RWAs, we have not only saved precious time but also a lot of man power of the government,’ he said. According to the government every herb with a stem diameter of at least 2 inches will be counted as a tree. There are more than 18,000 parks and gardens in Delhi where the census is being conducted.
