Union health minister Harsh Vardhan, who was chairing the meet of state secretaries on NHAM on Thursday, asked state officials to study the blueprint of the scheme give their inputs to make it more patient-centric without affecting the basic growth of public healthcare system.
Vardhan said the scheme would end forever the marginalisation of the majority of Indians from quality and affordable health care.
NHAM is presently being readied for submission to the Union Cabinet. After it meets with approval, it will be rolled out by the end of the current financial year in a phased manner. The minister said that a sound regulatory system would be erected to ensure that the assurance does not remain a paper promise.
While talking to Millennium Post, CK Mishra, additional secretary as well as MD of National Health Mission, said that the government is planning to offer 50 advanced medicine and 30 AYUSH medicines for free to the beneficiaries of the scheme. Apart from this, the government will also put some diagnostic procedures in the ambit of this scheme. Mishra further informed that almost 30 states, including UTs, are in sound talk with the government to roll out the scheme.
The scheme, which is divided into three parts — primary, secondary and tertiary — has the provision to provide medical treatment to patients under below poverty line (BPL) and economic weaker sections (EWS) for free. The patients of cardiac disorder, cancer and other life taking diseases would be treated free.
Even though states and UTs health secretaries present on the occasion welcomed the broad proposals in the NHAM, some state health secretaries such as Vini Mahajan (Punjab), K Bhandari (Sikkim), Alok Shukla (Chhattisgarh), Rina Ray (Andaman & Nikobar), J Radhakrishnan (Tamil Nadu), Malay Kumar De (West Bengal), Sujata Sonik (Maharshtra), N Sivasailam (Karnataka) and Jharkhand NHM managing director Ashish Singhmar, raised fundamental points that needed to be addressed before finalising the draft of the scheme.
Present on the occasion were Lov Verma, union health secretary, Jagdish Prasad, director
general of health services, Anshu Prakash, joint secretary, and others.
