Delhi government on Tuesday denied that odd-even car-rationing scheme was causing traffic jams on some city roads, saying it was due to construction and repair work being carried out by Delhi Metro, PWD and Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
Transport Minister Gopal Rai also directed Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Public Works Department (PWD) and DJB to carry out construction and repair works at night during the ongoing second phase of the fortnight-long odd-even scheme.
“Some people are saying that there have been traffic jams on roads due to odd-even scheme. But as per our study, construction and repair works, which are being done by various agencies during day hours, are contributing significantly to road congestion.
“In view of this, government has directed DMRC, DJB and PWD to take up their maximum possible construction and repair works during night hours only to avoid traffic jams in the day,” he said. Rai further said that government has identified five road points where traffic congestion is being reported during the implementation of the scheme. These points are Dhaula Kuan, Nehru Place, Sangam Vihar, Bhairon Marg and ITO.
“At Dhaula Kuan, Nehru Place and Bhairon Marg, DMRC, PWD and DJB are taking up their some construction or repair works which are causing traffic jams,” he said. Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has directed all its depot managers to identify such points of hurdles and inform the government so that it can find a solution to ensure smooth traffic, he added.
