Government likely to roll back court fee

Members of Bar Council of Delhi on Thursday met revenue minister A K Walia, and if sources are to be believed, Delhi government may roll back the revised court fee that was passed by Delhi legislative assembly during budget session.

Sources in the revenue department said in the forthcoming monsoon session, slated from September first week, the proposed hike might be withdrawn.

According to council secretary Murari Tiwari, members requested for withdrawal of the notification of the court fees (Delhi Amendment) Bill, 2012, as it did not have the amendments suggested by the Delhi lawyers.

Earlier, lawyers in six district courts of Patiala House, Tis Hazari, Karkardooma, Rohini, Saket and Dwarka abstained from work, to protest against the hike.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, on the other hand,  had justified the over 10-fold hike in court fees, saying the rates have been revised after a gap of 55 years and the increase was in tune with the instructions of Delhi high court.

In a letter given to Walia, the members lamented, ‘The bill was notified and made applicable without deciding our representations. Such a bill is against the spirit of the constitution of India which guarantees justice to every individual irrespective of his financial status’.
