There was a fight reported between five individuals – including the accused – at block 20 in Trilokpuri area, from where the clashes are said to have originated. When police went to the spot on 23 October, two youths were arrested but this particular accused had to be spared because there was no evidence against him at all, said a senior police official.
He further said that the accused also convinced the police that when the incident was reported, he was engaged in some routine religious activity. When the clashes broke out on Friday evening, it then came to light that the accused was one of the first to hurl stones and guide other youth in the area, initiating the violence.
By the time police started searching for him, he had gone underground and has been absconding since then, turning out to be on the top of the ‘wanted’ list. ‘The accused is a bad character in the police list and has his own residence near Block 20 of Trilokpuri. Police has been hunting for him for the past thee days and he will be nabbed soon,’ the senior official added.
On Tuesday morning, five more people were arrested for their involvement in the riots and all of them were found to be ‘bad characters’ in the police list. ‘However, three men – including the accused who dodged police by his alibis on 23 October – whose names were shortlisted as key figures in the conduct of the riots are still absconding,’ said a source. Police also confirmed that they are taking into consideration all the reports that have emerged against former BJP legislator from the region, Sunil Vaidya, and his involvement in the riots. ‘He shall be arrested if the need arises,’ another senior official confirmed.
