Gold from the slums!

LONDON MUSINGS

A billion-plus aspiring superpower-in-hurry is expecting a windfall of bullions from London, the offshore storehouse of Indian gold for centuries. Expectations from India at the non-cricket world-level competition of powerhouses, has never been so high. One cannot stop the expectations of the world's most ‘young’ countrymen flying high, but then can you expect magic from Danny Boyle’s ‘slumdog’ Indians endlessly struggling, or made to, for their individual fame and glory – and perhaps – their ‘million’ too.

Team India London has, barring a few, a driver's son, an auto-wallah’s daughter and even two modest BPL mothers competing for country’s medals. And Indians, like daydreamers are looking for instant glory on the world stage. Sorry countrymen, it is not aristocratic cricket between handful of nations, but war of sports between 204 countries that include China and USA, competing seconds by seconds, inch by inch, for complete supremacy. Let India’s London show – good or bad – be taken as a stepping stone or good learning exercise for a nation of 1.25 billion. Merely cricket obsession won't do.
