Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel has supported the movement of over 2,000 public schools in the city which are facing closure due to the small size of plots. Addressing a rally near the Vidhan Sabha on Monday, Goel said the quality of education must be the criterion for schools, not the size of the plots. The government must do something to save the career of thousands of students studying in these schools, he said.
'The government must come to the rescue of the schools which are imparting education to lakhs of students in unauthorised colonies and J J clusters,' said Goel. Thousands of teachers, staff and members of management of public schools participated in the protest. 'The issue has already been mentioned to various authorities in Delhi. The Lieutenant Governor and the Delhi Chief Minister had given verbal assurance that the land norms will be relaxed,' added Goel.
The members of the school management stressed the the deadline for registration is nearing, so the government must take action soon. Most of these schools are situated in slums, jhuggis, rehabilitated and unauthorised colonies, where sufficient land and schools are not available. Therefore, it is impossible to meet the criterion of 200 square yards of land for a primary school.
