Goa to go hi-tech for clean up

Goa’s garbage disposal woes may end soon with the BJP government considering various possibilities for more efficient waste disposal including an offer from an American waste treatment company. Goa Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza told Millennium Post the government is focusing on dealing with the garbage disposal problem on a scientific basis and is exploring the possibility of establishing two hi-tech solid waste treatment plants in the districts.

'The most common technology in waste disposal is composting which requires segregating waste mechanically or manually to produce gas, diesel or even electricity. However, for commercially feasible production, we require at least 100 tonnes of waste,' he said, adding that while Goa generates about 400 tonnes of waste, logistics and collection remains major a problem with the state’s vast interiors comprising 189 villages, 14 municipal councils. And all being handled by one corporation. The minister said an American company called AMIOS has requested for four acres of land to set up their waste treatment plants, which in turn would generate electricity that could be bought by the government at approved rates.  'Fomento has already started it in Margao and also at Sonsoddo, and once the new treatment plants are started, the garbage problem will be a thing of the past. The Goa government has enough funds to deal with the garbage problem and at present, we have people segregating and composting garbage manually in hillside sheds from where the separated plastic is taken away in trucks by a company in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra,' he said.
